  • NO! if this happens to a human hair wig and synthetic wig it can be destroyed.

  • The best way to store a wig is in a shoe box or one of my boxes that I will provide when you purchase your wig. Placing it in a box will increase life span and keep it cleaner.

  • You can only color your wig if it is real human hair and non-chemicalized. This should be handled by a wig professional.

  • Synthetic hair wigs can be irreparably damaged if you try to curl or straighten the hair with hot tools. Consider human hair wigs for the ultimate styling versatility – you can curl or straighten them as you would your own hair.

  • Yes! Wigs can last longer if not worn daily. You can be washing and air-drying one while wearing the other. If you wear human hair or heat-friendly synthetic hair, you can keep one styled straight and the other curly to reduce stress. Here is a tip I love: If you’d like your wig to be your secret, get two or three of your favorite styles and I will cut them and style them all the same or in stages. You can create the illusion of hair growth and haircuts and no one will notice.

  • Synthetic hair and human hair each have special needs in order to maintain their look and feel. There is no need to cleanse daily, but if you wear your wig every day, wash your wig once a month. If you wear your wig once every other day or three times a week, then wash it once every two months. If you wash it more often the life span will be shorter.

  • Not to worry! There is great solution with No Sweat Liners. Ask Lisa about them during your consultation.

  • 100% Hand-Tied or double monofilament wigs tend to be most gentle on sensitive scalps. Some people use wig caps to protect the scalp.

  • All human given hair wigs tend to offer the most natural look. Styles with lace front will give the appearance of a natural hairline. When it comes to choosing styles, consider styles that will be most flattering given your face shape, As far as for color try to stick close to your own natural hair color.

Caring for Your Wig

  1. Brushing- Brushing your wig is VERY IMPORTANT. Brush before you put it on. The brush must be a paddle brush or a vent brush. Brush your hair starting from the bottom working your way up.

  2. Putting the wig on- Place both hands on the neck of the wig and make sure the wig is upside down. Place your forehead inside the wig. Make sure that the hairline of the wig is sitting against your forehead. This will give you security while you pull the wig all the way back to your neck. Flip your head over once the wig is on your head completely.

  3. Adjustments- After you have placed the wig on your head and flipped over, you are going to move your hands near your temples. Feel for both tabs on the wig on each side of your temples. Make sure the tabs are evened out with each other. This is how you know the wig is on correctly.

  4. Hairline placement- After evening the temples, slide your fingers upward to lift the wig so you can move it to your hair line. DO NOT PULL THE WIG FROM THE TOP! place one hand on top of the wig to keep it from moving. On the other hand, pull the cap down making sure it is laying nicely against your neck. Repeat for the other side.

  5. Taking the wig off- Place both hands at the bottom of the cap pulling the wig forward to take it off. After the wig is off, YOU MUST BRUSH IT! This will help it from getting tangled and knots.

  6. Putting the wig away. Hold the wig in one hand and lean it against your chest. The hair should be against your chest and the inside of the wig should be facing outward. Place tissue paper inside the cap so that the tissue can keep it from flatting and losing its shape. Tuck the hair under and make sure the sides are nicely under as well. Place it in your box. You have succeeded!!! The wig can go to bed. YAY!!!

The Best Wig Styling Products

Hairspray- Sebastian super plus is great for shaping the hair and it is not sticky. Light weight. Amazon, CVS or Sally’s Beauty Supply Tresmé Hairspray #4 - This is a strong hold to finish after you have styled it. It goes on after the Sebastian hairspray. Do not spray too much. Great for windy days. Sally’s Beauty Supply, CVS or Amazon Shampoo, Conditioner and washing - You can use whatever you are using but no Head-n- shoulders or Pantene. Head -n-shoulders is for medical purposes and Pantene leaves a coating.

DO NOT put your wig in a BOWL!! with shampoo and letting it sit. When washing it in this way you will leave the dirt sitting in the hair even though you think you are cleaning it.

You must hold the wig in one hand and with the other hand you need to apply the shampoo in your palm using a one downward motion. You should not wash it back and forth and scrunch it up. This will cause matting.

Water pressure is important. Wash your hair wherever there is medium to strong pressure. Wash the wig in lukewarm water first. NEVER HOT. Apply shampoo. A medium amount is good for medium to long hair. Short hair 50 cents worth. Lukewarm water gets rid of all the dirt. When finishing with the conditioner, wash it out with COLD water and make sure you get it all out or it will leave residue when blow-drying. It is not good to air dry your human hair but for synthetic it is ok. If you let your human hair wig out to air dry it can cause a smell and even mildew.

I love Joco, Tea Tree, Paul Mitchelle, Revlon or suave for shampoo and conditioner’s

Brushes- Paddle brush, vent brush and round brush are great for long thick hair and great for blow - drying medium to long hair. Must have ball tip tourmaline bristles. This will keep the brush from getting caught on the lace cap of the wig. Detangling paddle brush that is 9.75” height,3.25” width and the handle 4.38” better control. That is the way to go.

Rund brushes- DO NOT USE metal round brushes. The bristles are sharp and can rip the lace cap of the wig and pull hair out.

Cricket is the name brand that you want to buy a round brush. A 1.9” or 2.5” size is great. The 2.5” is for bigger curl when blow-drying the hair under. The 1.9” is best for shorter hair and styling bangs.

Vent Brush- Cricket static free is the name brand that you want. Better hold, control and flo. 8.875” is great. The brush will have red bristles with the ball tip tourmaline.

Vent Brush- Has openings so that the heat from the blow-dryer goes through. This will give you an air-dry look. It takes longer to blow-dry but it gives it the lightweight feel.

Round Brushes- If you have short hair, then a medium to small round brush will work fine. Round brushes for wigs are used for blow-drying the bottom of the hair under. Do not use the round brush on top of the wigs. It will cause tangling or can get caught in the lace and rip it. If you don’t know what you are doing call me!

Blow – Dryers- The best blow-dryers that works great and not heavy is the CHI 1875 series- $68.00 – Amazon- Dries fast as well.

You want to use the FLAT NOZZEL to achieve soft, smooth and straight hair.

Curling Irons- The best curling irons are HOT TOOLS, which is the brand name. Metal curling irons are the best, NOT CERAMIC. You can buy them on Amazon or Sally’s Beauty Supply. Amazon is cheaper but not by much. 1’’ curling iron is the best size to achieve beach curls, loose curls and tight curls. You want to keep the Iron all the way to 450 degrees. IT WILL NOT BURN THE HAIR. When curling count to three for loose, 5 for tighter and 10 for really tight.

If you want the curls to stay for a while, curl the hair and while it is in the iron, use tresme hair spray and spray it about 6” away and not too much hairspray, only enough to cover the hair on the iron. If you put too much it will be sticky, and the iron will not work as well. After the spray open the iron to let the hair go in a downward motion, then go to the next curl. When curling, it is best to put the hair up in sections and start from the bottom up.

Wig placement for styling- DO NOT! Keep your wig on a head for storage. This will cause stretching over time. A shoe box is the best way to keep the life span of your wig young.

YOU CAN keep the wig on a canvas head for styling it. Canvas heads are made for styling your wig not Styrofoam. I do provide canvas heads here at the Wig Spa.

You will need a thin table or counter to attach the wig stand. A bathroom is great or a desk.

Things that you do not do- DO not put oil on your scalp, then put on the wig. This can cause the knots to come loose or undone.

Important Notes:

Do not keep the wig on a mannequin head. This will cause stretching.

Do not put any gel, a lot of hairspray, hair wax on any kids of products on your wig.

Do not wear your good wig on the beach, in a pool, in the ocean, or in a sauna. This can cause permanent damage.

Do not sleep with your wig on. If you need to sleep with the wig on, use an old human hair wig or an old synthetic wig.

Do not wear rubber bands, only hair clips that have smooth teeth not sharp.
